Having several decades of experience behind us, we have observed that both a single SCADA system, and the process of developing with SCADA tend to include certain shortcomings related to problems of appearance.

The development of a single SCADA system is usually limited to the system itself; rarely or never are the developers of the system supported with a high-quality set of symbols that can be used under a wide range of conditions.This shortcoming can leave its mark both on the SCADA system, and on the application that is developed with it.

One of these frequently encountered problems is the poor pallet of symbols which are available - or in other words, that you do not have available any symbol which is even close to the one you would like to use. This is when you are forced to use a symbol that does not really belong in an image, where you put a caption next to it to show you what you would really like to depict. In more extreme cases, you might use only a small geometric shape, with an inscription inside. If you are luckier, you will find a symbol which might in theory be appropriate, but in its style clashes with the other symbols in your image. More and more users are turning to developers with the - in our mind quite justified - request that they would like to see depicted exactly the type of object that they are using on their SCADA screen which matches the technology that they are working with. However, in the majority of cases, such a solution is not available. Another frequent cause of problems is that a given symbol might be the one that you need, but in its size differs from the size of the image that you would like to be using. This presents particular difficulties in the case of SCADA that uses pixel graphics. Last but not least another problem may be that the development system you are using is based on vector graphics, but the symbol that you have is based on pixel graphics, and increasing or decreasing it in size causes a loss in quality. All of the above are problems which can ruin the impact of the otherwise meticulous and creative work that you have performed, and this loss in quality is one that even a layperson can notice. This may be the exact interface that is most visible to a client who is important to you, or who is looking at a demo of your work with interest - for example, at a tradeshow. Now let's look at the alternative and let's imagine that standing out from the field of numerous, draft-quality demonstrations, your work alone has behind it a conscientiously and precisely planned set of symbols. When we speak of high-quality symbols, we mean that each symbol is designed with the work of engineers and/or electrical specialists and colleagues, who include their more important observations, which are incorporated into the design process. Through the steps we have also laid the foundation for animations and 3D appearances which we will soon be publishing. We prepare every symbol in 8 different colors, in order to help differentiate between the various states of industrial objects (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, gray, cyan). Further supporting the idea of quality, all of our symbols are "directional". By this we mean that we have a different set for the left to right, and for the right to left direction (as well as from top to bottom, and bottom to top). The reason these required differentiation is that the symbols include light sources and shadow. . Every object is designed to show illumination by a light source in the upper-left quadrant. If we had only one type of symbol, and a developer mirrored it horizontally, then the lighting and shadow would have the opposite effect. This would have a distracting effect even if two such objects were far from each other, to say nothing of objects next to each other. More plainly stated: rather than requiring developers to mirror or rotate the symbols, we make them available separately, and thereby unify the look of shadow and light. It is true that this takes considerable work, but we could not stop at the types of simple line drawings that are used in many places.
